Why do you need strength training after age 40?

  • The dark blue is those in the lowest third of muscle.

  • Light blue is the middle.

  • White is the highest third of muscle mass.

Researchers compared muscle mass to mortality in those under 60 (left side) and over 60 (right side). As you can see, muscle mass over age 60 isn’t about vanity—it’s about survival.

Muscle is crucial for longevity

In a 2008 British Medical Journal study, those in the top third for muscle mass had half the risk of death from all causes compared to those in the bottom third.

Half.

That’s a bigger impact than quitting smoking.

Here’s the scary thing…

Most People Lose 40% of Their Muscle By Age 80

But it doesn’t have to be that way…

These are MRI cross-sections of human thighs.
The top image shows a 70-year-old sedentary person—note the marbled fat inside the muscle and the large ring of body fat surrounding the leg.

The second image shows a fit 40-year-old—mostly solid muscle, minimal fat.

Now look at the third image: a 70-year-old who trains. It looks almost identical to the 40-year-old.

We are defined more by our training than our age.

What the Science (and Experience) Say Works

After decades of coaching and clinical work, we’ve found THE GOLDEN RULE OF AGING STRONG: STRENGTH TRAINING

So what do you do if you feel like you’ve lost some strength?

Is it possible to build muscle and strength when you’re older?

Research shows that you can, indeed, teach an old dog new tricks

Subjects over 85 when put through a 12-week lower body strength training program saw 44% increase in muscle size and a 50% increases in quad strength.

Others studies have confirmed these findings time and again (even in those over the age of 90!)

In other words, muscle wasting can be reversed.

Why Most People Fail at Strength Training After 40

Strength training is too important to get wrong.

When adults over 40 start strength training, most:

  1. Don’t know where to start, so they don’t train hard enough to see change…

  2. Use poor form or progress too fast and end up injured…

  3. Follow generic programs not made for their age, mobility, or health history…

That’s the gap we fill.

At Village:

  • Every client starts with a 1-on-1 evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy

  • We choose the right exercises, with the right form, at the right starting point

  • Our coaches are expertly trained to progress you safely and consistently

Got questions? We got answers!

  • One-on-one training is fully customized—just you and your coach, working through a plan built around your goals, injuries, and preferences.
In small group training, everyone’s doing the same core movements, but the variation, intensity, and coaching cues are adjusted to your level. You still get personalized coaching—just in a small, supportive group setting.

  • Absolutely. Your coach will meet you where you’re at and progress you from there. You don’t need to be in shape to start—you just need to start.

  • That’s exactly what we’re built for. Our physical therapists and coaches work together to help you move better, feel better, and get strong—safely.

  • We talk about nutrition during sessions when it’s appropriate, but if you really want coaching to make change, we have one-on-one nutrition coaching as a separate service.
Learn more about our nutrition coaching here.

  • Most clients train 2–3 times a week and get great results.

  • You’re not alone—many people start with us for exactly that reason.
